New Energy Bills Discount Scheme for businesses
The government unveils new “Energy Bills Discount Scheme” for businesses – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
The current Energy Bill Relief Scheme announced in September 2022 comes to an end next month. It was introduced to support businesses and public sector organisations by providing a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices.
The new Energy Bills Discount Scheme will continue to support businesses from April 1st 2023, whilst limiting taxpayer’s exposure to volatile energy markets, with a cap set at £5.5 billion.
Details on the specific discounts for gas and electricity bills for eligible, non-domestic customers are highlighted in the attached guidance article.
There will also be additional support for Energy and Trade Intensive Industries, for which a full list of eligible sectors can be found here: 230104_ETII_List_for_gov.uk.pdf (publishing.service.gov.uk)
The new scheme will no doubt help many businesses by reducing their operational expenses, and thereby increasing cashflow somewhat over the next year, but this may not be enough to protect those that are facing other significant challenges.
